There's no real substitute for joining in gate practice. The word practice sums it up. You could use some wood as a slope and practice balancing with your front wheel against a wall. I used to gate into an old arm-chair. Best to practice with others and get some tips. Relax and enjoy the learning process. Where's your local club?
